It is as though you rubbed a Genie's lamp and were brought to an enchanted place of magical beauty populated by a fairy named Mary and an elf named Rudy, who regale you with captivating stories and the warmest of greetings and hospitality.  Dr. Paul Jankiewicz

My girlfriends and I have been making an annual trip to Crafts People for 10 years now. It is the perfect place to escape for a day of shopping, browsing, chatting and laughing. We look forward to this weekend all year long and I still cherish every piece I’ve purchased for myself or others in the many buildings on the property. The staff are always cheerful and helpful without being pushy or intrusive. We will be there this Saturday and I can hardly wait!!

Jill Warner

My friend and I visited Crafts People a few times and have always found such wonderful things to buy. We'll be heading up that way the first weekend in November and can't wait to see what new items are there. Can't wait to visit again! Nancy Iaria
My sister and I are two girls displaced in the south but our roots are in the Catskills. We come up as often as possible and The Crafts People is our absolute most favorite place to shop, for gifts, for family, for home and for us! So many unique and special pieces. We never miss a trip to The Crafts People each and every time we are up here.

Hi!
I live in Tennessee but have been coming to the Crafts People every year ever since I can remember. My grandmother purchased a ceramic pitcher in the shape of a cow for me over 20 years ago that I found at the Crafts People and adored and have used ever since. A visit to the Crafts People will continue to be must for my family and me every visit to the Catskills.
Cheers!
Anne Ingram

Greetings from Sunny Florida! I will make it a point to drop by the shop next time I am in town; I’d love to see all of the lovely things you describe! I told my brother, Brett, he had better do the same. Love ya!

Valerie Friedman

We visit the area several times each year, and always plan a day trip to the Crafts People. It is well worth making the extra effort to find. (It is off the beaten path.) There is an incredible selection which is always changing, and there are so many artists featured that everyone is bound to find a number of pieces they “need” for themselves and for gifts.

The best place to get inspired or find a unique gift -- even if just for yourself! I'm never disappointed when I leave there, and I never leave empty-handed. Just enjoying a drink and a long conversation with Rudy and Mary is worth the drive alone.

Love you guys!
Elizabeth Dunn

Hi Rudy,
Every time I come to the area to visit my friend Bonnie, I always stop by to see what’s new at Crafts People. You and the other staff at Crafts people are warm and the atmosphere is very friendly. The best part is you have unique and reasonable priced things to buy for myself and for gifts.
I’ll be visiting Crafts People again soon.
Thea

I had my first trip to Crafts People in July while visiting my sister. I cannot believe that I had to move away to Hawaii only to come back for a visit and discover this amazingly wonderful place ( I have my sister to thank for that) I daydream about coming back as soon as I can. There is no nicer shopping experience anywhere!! Well, for the time being I can enjoy my purchases until I come visit next. I so very much enjoyed chatting with Rudy. Thanks for having such an amazing place, see you soon.

The pottery building is my favorite! It takes me forever to decide as it's all so beautiful and unique. The ornament room is a treasure come Holiday time too. The atmosphere in all the buildings is wonderful - and I know my girls like the jewelry building the best.

I just got back from a wonderful visit to your shops. Every time I
visit, I discover something new and wonderful, as well as finding work
by my long-time favorite craftspeople. What a pleasure. Your selection
is amazing. Too bad I live so far away. GB

WHEN CUSTOMERS COME TO MY HOUSE FOR THEIR READINGS, THEY LOOK AROUND AT AMAZEMENT. I KEEP A GOOD SUPPLY OF CRAFTSPEOPLE BUSINESS CARDS ON HAND, AS CUSTOMERS ADMIRE THE MANY YEARS OF BEAUTIFUL HAND CRAFTED ITEMS THAT I HAVE COLLECTED IN OVER 25 YEARS OF SHOPPING AT RUDYS. THEN THEIR IS MY WARDROBE & OUTFITS OF CLOTHING , ONE OF KIND , THAT PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED AND ASKED WHERE DID YOU EVER GET THAT???????? IT'S LIKE I'VE TRAVELED ALL OVER THE WORLD WHEN LOOKING AT SOME OF THE TREASURES THROUGH THE YEARS THAT HAVE MADE MY HOME A HAPPY PLACE. HELL , JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YEAR I BOUGHT THE ITEM IS GETTING TOUGHER AND TOUGHER. NOT TO MENTION THE MANY GIFTS THAT I HAD GOOD INTENTIONS OF GIVING TO OTHERS, BUT WOUND UP KEEPING THEM FOR MYSELF. BUT THE BEST ITEMS ARE THE ONES , THAT RUDY HIMSELF HAS MADE , MANY PIECES OF ORIG POTTERY THAT SURROUND ME AND IT BRINGS BACK MANY GOOD TIMES WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT I HAVE BROUGHT TO THIS WONDERLAND OF A CRAFT PLACE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE HERE, AND YOU KNOW THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS IT.....: ) BLESSINGS PSYCHIC SUE C.

craftspeople is a little haven in the woods for the smile inside of you...the one that comes out when you meet that piece that belongs at home with you. it is a place where you can relax and just breathe art, while enjoying wonderful company, and (my favorite) hot cider in a one of a kind mug. i always leave craftspeople feeling renewed and treasuring something new in a little bag :) how many times have my friends asked "where did you get that?"
mary and rudy, i hope you are enjoying your summer and your gardening! ~ see you soon!

I have known Rudy and Mary since my childhood and I have always been left in amazement every time that I have visited them and their shop. The crafts are ALWAYS bound to catch your attention and your imagination. The visit is always made all the much better by the smiles of Rudy and Mary and their immense hospitality. You will walk away with a feeling of satisfaction and a yearning to come back again and again!

Hi Rudy and Mary!
Just wanted to wish you all a very happy Thaksgiving and let you know how thankful I am for you and the creative haven of Craftspeople....where else can a soul go to feel so nourished by sights, sounds, smells, and wonderful people?  Especially at this time of the year, it is so necessary and refreshing to make the pilgrimage to see you guys.  We shall see you in a few weeks...be well!!!!

Received a comment in www.animmovablefeast.com.  Thought I would quote it here for you:
"Now, happily, after lunch we drove through the woods to a property just off the highway, and it was one of the truly great places I have ever been. It is called Crafts People, and Elizabeth has been telling me about it for years - over 500 local artists have their handmade wares on display in four structures spread accross a couple of acres. The place is owned and run by a couple of aging hippies, friendly people who pour you wine and chat with you while you browse. Now this was everything I had hoped to find in Woodstock. Elizabeth bought a gorgeous, handmade necklace and I bought my brother a compass in a hand-painted wooden box. (I have not seen my bother since returning, I suppose I just ruined the surprise.) If this wasn't a food blog, I would probably do a post just on Crafts People.

Crafts People has been my reason for returning to Woodstock year after year. So happy you've found it, too. Mary and Rudy are gems. But their prices are amazing. The last time I was there I bought my very favorite pair of earrings for only thirty dollars, silver with amazing inlay work. The prices are worth more than the visit.

JustinM answered...
My better half's mom has been going there for decades; she remembers when the only building in which stuff was sold was the owner's house. I met Rudy and Mary briefly and they seemed like great people. I bought a necklace for myself and the compass I mentioned. The total for both items was just over $30.

It is so rare these days to find a place that is unique and timeless. Certainly the town of Woodstock did not have any of that. Crafts People is about as good as it gets.

I won't go to the Hudson Valley without visiting Crafts People. Crafts People is like coming home, only better. I get to drink my favorite: white wine with a splash of lemonade and a sprig of fresh garden mint. The conversation is great, punctuated with gales of laughter, AND I get to buy truly beautiful and unique gifts for myself, my friends and my family. Rudy and Mary are truly special people. Why don't more people know about Crafts People?

JustinM replies...
I don't know. I do know for a fact that a lot of people don't want something that's unique - they want something from Restoration Hardware or Anthropologie that their friends will immediately recognize and know the value of. Seeking out places like Crafts People takes effort, something alot of people don't want to make.

It was very nice to see you guys again and to spend some time catching up and sharing stories. It was a laugh. We love your shops...so many cool things that Brittney says she has to have. We'll be back real soon.

It was so nice to read your newsletter today. I truly love my visits to your shops. I always get loved ones special gifts from your shops, and always find it impossible not to treat myself to something as well. I love adding to my jewelry and pottery collection a bit more each year.

Happy Spring!

Dear Rudy and Mary,

I LOVE CRAFTSPEOPLE!!! As you know, for several years I used to live nearby and moved back to Connecticut in 1987. I still love to visit my friends and the mountains. My mother and I try to make it up every 3 months. We are never disappointed! I am always amazed at the beauty and quality of all your items. My Mother and I enjoy our pottery collections, and I try to pick up at least one (usually 2 or 3) jewelry items. Our Christmas gifts always come from here! Your joyful hospitality adds to the ambiance. I have recently began to bring my neighbors for the ride. They love the places I visit - and they LOVE Crafts People. My daughter Christine and her friends love to go in the #4 building to pick out a sweet smelling soap. It's March now, so we are due for a return. We'll see you soon!!!!
Sincerely Laura, Joyce, Christine and our friends and neighbors (which are also our friends)

You can go to a mall and spend time going in and out of a multitude of stores, all to purchase mass produced items...OR you can go to Crafts People where you can listen to music, have a glass of wine or hot cider, and buy unusual gifts that are hand-made, and absolutely beautiful. It's a no-brainer! There are lovely displays of pottery, glass, wood, jewelry, plants, frames, lamps, stained glass pieces, paintings, photography, and children's toys, to name a few. There is also a large selection of Christmas tree ornaments.

I have been shopping at Crafts People for about 20 years, and although I live in "Mall Heaven" (otherwise known as northern NJ), it remains my favorite place to shop.

Besides many buildings filled to the brim with high quality crafts sold at reasonable prices and gift wrapped for free, there are great conversations with Rudy and Mary that I throughly enjoy. If you have never shopped at Crafts People, you are in for a rare treat!

Last but not least, I can almost guarantee that you will be able to get all of your Chanukah/Christmas shopping done under one roof, and that the recipients of your gifts will be delighted. It is also a wonderful place to buy wedding, shower, birthday, anniversary, and house-warming gifts. You can't go wrong taking a trip to the scenic Hudson Valley, and stopping by Crafts People. Enjoy my best customer tip of the decade!
A happy customer,
Robin Stahl

.We were with you yesterday (2/11/07) accompanied by our daughter. We came to visit her, but specifically to do shopping at Craftspeople. We're from New Jersey and though our daughter lives in Stone Ridge, it's still a trip for us. But we've always found lots of great things to buy for ourselves as well as gifts for others.

It's so nice to shop with you. You're welcoming and very helpful. With your coffee, tea and cider, it just adds to the experience. That experience carries through to all four buildings. We've been to you before and we'll be back. It's just a great experience. Thank you.

I love you guys so much! I just gave everyone in my company your business card for a Christmas present because discovering your place is truly a wonderful thing!

So many businesses could learn so much by your example...quality customer service and top notch products combined with a welcoming atmosphere. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my friends!

Your assembled craft works are the best, by far, that I have ever seen. I am afraid to take my wife there as she is like a kid in a candy store. We always find something we have to buy and the pieces are on display here in Ohio. When we have company, we are sure to serve something on a platter or plate that we have purchased from you. Keep up the good work and we will stop on our next journey east. The shopping experience is unique and so are the owners.

Just wanted to let you know that I am a “frequent flyer” and have purchased many beautiful items for my friends and family.. I even still have the Mexican geranium I bought a couple of years ago blooming in my house!!!

The days of sending far-away friends and relations expensive holiday parcels are gone (for me anyway) where the postage costs as much as the contents, but I have become a hit by sending the perfect token gifts: holiday ornaments! Crafts People is where I go to get them as your selection is fun, eclectic, and affordable, so you have become top of my list of "Go to" places for the hols. BTW - we are a UK/Irish family combo so those ornaments are getting around. --Claire

I am from North Carolina and whenever I drive or fly up to see my sister, I always ask her to take me to Crafts People. The hospitality and the beauty of the place keeps me coming back. It's wonderful to relax and enjoy a beverage as I shop. Everyone is friendly and the prices are great. I always tell others that if you are in that area, it is the place to go. In fact, you'll be seeing ya'll next weekend! Can't wait to bring some treasures and memnories home. Thank you for making it a special place!

Crafts People is the perfect antidote for people who are sick of the mall, tired of the lines, annoyed by overpriced, poorly made art and products, and feel accosted by salespeople every time they step into a store.

From the time you pull up the driveway at Crafts People, you know you're in for something different. Four charming buildings surrounded by lush greenery, with the smell of a fire-burning stove entices you in. How many shops have you been to where you're offered hot cider or cold lemonade when you walk in the door?

Mary and Rudy, the owners, set the vibe. They are so talented, creative, gregarious and unique, and seeing them every time feels somewhat like a homecoming. The craftspeople whose work they display, in addition to their own, reflect their appreciation of all things beautiful and functional, from whimsical little Christmas ornaments to gorgeous haute handmade jewelry, pottery, glassware, and woodworks. Did I mention the birds? They have two beautiful parrots that will speak to you if you pass their extremely high standards of acceptable human companionship.

I live in NYC, and every time I walk into an American Craftsman store, I am fondly reminded of Crafts People and the contrasts they provide. American Craftsman, while it carries many interesting and beautiful crafts, is a store first, a destination second. Crafts People is a place where you can while away an afternoon, engage in stimulating conversation, and pick up beautiful works of art for people you love to extend a bit of that feeling to them. I often dream of dropping out of the 'rat race' and living their lives :) And I send everyWoodstock visitor to Crafts People. It's a can't miss destination.

Hi Rudy and Mary,

I really enjoyed reading about both of you and learning about the Crafts People gallery and your careers in craft.

Hi Rudy and Mary,

I cannot say enough about Crafts People. We absolutely love the shops and love you guys too. As you know we've been coming up there for more than 30 years! Boy, are we old. As natives of New Jersey we were able to get up there quite often. The ride up the New York Thruway is beautiful and only took about two hours. Now, unfortunately, we live near Pittburgh, PA which makes the ride about seven hours, so our trips are much more infrequent, but nevertheless, we still make the trek at least twice a year.

We've always loved the area, the Ashokan Reservoir, the Catshill Mountains, Woodstock, etc. It's gloriously beautiful any time of the year. It's wonderful to have Crafts People as a destination when we travel up there.

I've not found another shop like Crafts People, where the selection is enormous, the quality impeccable, and the atmosphere so warm and inviting. When we walk into the shops we are welcomed like family, with the offer of a beverage and a friendly hello. Mary and Rudy, you fill the air with your wonderful conversation and complete knowledge of your inventory.

Not only do you offer your own hand crafted items, you offer works from more than five hundred artisans from around the country. The items you sell aren't like the cheesy arts and crafts type of stuff sold at flea markets, what you represent is high quality works of art made by highly skilled craftsmen, from jewelry to stained glass, pottery, and glassware to stationery...and all at very reasonable prices.

Whenever we need to buy a gift for a special occasion we make sure we head up to Crafts People. Thank you for providing us with the best selection of hand made crafts in the country!!!!

I commend Rudy and Mary for their devotion and passion for providing such high quality crafts in a gentle country setting. I envy those who live only a few hours from Crafts People; ours is a 7 hour drive but we take the journey gladly. We always find special treasures for our friends and family at very reasonable prices. And speaking of treasure: my wife and I proudly wear silver rings which were made by Mary to commemorate our 25th wedding anniversary! And I do admit to seeking out pottery with Rudy's distinctive signature on the bottom! Great shops (don't miss any of them!); Great gifts (be sure to treat yourself!);Great hospitality! Great People!...all nestled in the beautiful Catshill Mountains near the Ashokan Reservoir. Bring a picnic lunch and spend the day like we do!

I always make sure I drop in at Crafts People when I am in the area, and it is my whole family's favorite "tourist stop" to share with out-of-town guests. Its selection of handmade items is a delight to browse, with glorious variety in types of items available, materials and workmanship. Good craftsmanship is a hallmark of items sold at Crafts People, and the wide variety of items allows us to find treasures in all price points. Perhaps most importantly, the atmosphere at Crafts People is comfortable and friendly. The owners and staff offer a variety of drinks to all shoppers, and are will both to allow the shopper space to explore, and to engage in conversation.
Thanks for all you do!
Sarah

Dear Rudy, Mary, and all who make Crafts People a special place-
Here are my musings on a cold icy day-

Since I live in Boston, I am only a once a year visitor, but I make sure that it counts! Living closer would be a bigger delight to my gift recipients.

The area has been a perfect annual meeting spot for old college friends from PA and MA for the past 10 years. Since we are also 'children' of the '60's, Crafts People offers a welcoming array of timeless treasures that will entice everyone. Where else can you peruse the varied talents of hundreds of artists with a glass of lemonade or wine and talk to a parrot too?

I have never walked out empty handed...included potted plants at the end of the season (and a dented exhaust system too :-(

I've passed along the link to relatives and friends from Rochester,NY to the Berkshires and they have raved about it too.

Keep up the good work and Happy New Year!
Jan Smola

This little collection of stores is a shopper's dream, and the perfect antidote to everything mass produced and mail-marketed. Wander through the four charming buildings in West Hurley countryside (near Woodstock) and prepare to lose yourself among the baubles, paintings, handmade candles, handmade children's toys, smooth-as-silk wood carvings, and jewelry galore. After many years of living and shopping in Manhattan, we discovered Crafts People and it has remained our go-to place for gifts. Wander with a steaming cup of cider, talk to the resident parrot, and prepare to discover treasure after treasure. I now live in California but still manage to make at least one pilgrimage a year. Don't miss it if you find yourself anywhere in the Woodstock area.

Hi, I love your shop and did spend money there last winter. I love coming and will again. It is a fun place and I have told many friends. I live at the Jersey Shore but my son has a ski house in Pine Hill. I will be seeing you sometime this winter. Have a Happy New Year and thank you for the gift.

Greetings to Everyone in the New Year!!!!

I know it will be better than last year?! I would like to thank Rudy and Mary for being so supportive of my 10 year old daughter. Although I now live in Connecticut, we make the trip to see your crafts several times a year. Christine bothered me for weeks to show the two of you her clay art she had been working on. She detailed the clay family room right down to the remote, mug, and bowl of popcorn. She could not wait to show the two of you. She was so proud when Rudy told her she could sell her items at the store if she baked them solid. I showed her how to do macrame, and she is working on clay decorative beads for me. Her hands are so tiny, I think she could make items for doll houses. Thank you again for making her so happy and excited about her art. Until we see you again....

Where else can you go that upon entering the door you are not only offered a libation but made to feel as if you are a friend, not just another customer? You leave not only with a newfound treasure, but with the gift of friendship. You make me feel more welcome than most of my relatives! (and yes, rudy, you can print that!) I remember the early days of just one room and a long table filled with pottery....Blessings and kudos to you all.
Darcee

The CRAFTS PEOPLE shops offer the best of the Catskill/Hudson Valley's artistry at very reasonable prices. To shop there is like visiting a summer crafts fair without the heat or hustle of the dusty crowds. When you arrive, you are greeted with soothing music and beverages. As you browse through the different buildings the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Best of all is the exceptional quality and diversity of the crafts. For more than 15 years we have relied on this wonderful shopping oasis for all our gift giving: engagements, house-warmings, birthdays, thank yous, and holiday presents.

Hi Rudy,

Happy New Year! It has been awhile since I have been to your awesome location. I always look forward to my visits to the Woodstock area from NJ. I love the creativity, talent and the warm friendly atmosphere of Crafts People! I look forward to my next visit...and the wonderful warm cider :)

Kind Regards,

Rudy and Mary,

Greetings from our new home in Northern Maine! I love it here. The saddest part of moving away from the Catskill Mountains however, is that  now have a 9 hour drive to get to Crafts People! The holidays this year were really tough without you! For the past 15 plus years I have done 90% of my holiday shopping there - I could always find just the right gift for everyone - from the toddlers who adore wooden toys to my mom who collects fine blown glass. Not to mention the camaraderie that always helped get me back in the spirit when I was at wits end from cleaning, wrapping, shoveling....

You can be certain that I will be back every chance I get. I know that it will be just the same - warm, welcoming, and filled with wonderful creations. I have always thought of Crafts People as my own private art gallery - and I miss it. I wish you all the best in this new and wonderful year. I hope to see you very soon!
Beth

Dear Rudy and Mary,

Crafts People is a magical place! Thanks for making it possible for folks to browse your shops for the most unique hand crafted items in a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. It is now more than 25 years since we first became acquainted and had that first glass of white wine with you.

I remember the first time visiting CP and recall all the beautiful pottery and planters on your front porch/stairs leading to the white country 'house' of crafts. I purchased a mug and kaleidoscope, I still have both. Back then we visited the area almost every weekend, if not, at least every month, for a few years.

After the kids arrived, we weren't able to visit for awhile, but the kids always heard about Rudy and CP and eventually they wanted to see what all the talk about Woodstock and Rudy and Crafts People was. We tried visiting once a year, now we are lucky if we visit once every two years, we are trying for the last weekend in June this year.

Everyone should plan a visit to the area, even if it is just to check out Crafts People. The warm welcome and vibe that abounds will have you feeling like you just don't want to ever leave and the hand crafted jewelry, pottery, glass and all sorts of baubles and niceties will have you coming back for more!
